Robert W. "Bob" Huff
Durand, Michigan

Robert W. "Bob" Huff, age 90, died on Wednesday evening December 22, 2010 at Avalon Hospice in Flint, Mich. He had been battling cancer. Mr. Huff is survived by his 3 sons and 2 daughters: Robert L. (Bob) Huff of Boyne City, MI, James W. "Jim" (Gladys) Huff of Harrison, MI, Patricia A. "Pat" (Tony) Humphry of Carbondale, CO, Daniel E. Huff & Susie Shufelt of Flushing, Michigan, Nancy M. (Tim) Hutchinson of Durand. Also surviving are 20 grandchildren, 24 great grandchildren & 1 great great grandchild. He was preceded in death by his wife, Gertrude E. (Nell) Huff , son Michael D. Huff, daughter in law Nancy Kay Huff, 2 brothers and 2 sisters .
He was a member of the Michigan Harness Racing Hall of Fame, longtime operator of Shiawasee Farm, Inc. the breeder and owner of the 1981 Hambletonian winner, Shiaway St Pat, the only Hambletonian winner in history to be bred, owned and raced by the same Michigan farm.
Bob never made it past the eighth grade, but his love of Standardbred horses carried him far beyond that station. He became an authority in Standardbred pedigrees and beyond his ownership of the 450-acre Shiawasee Farm in Durand, Mich. he established a consulting firm, Huff's Standardbred Service, and was a part owner of both the Michigan Standardbred Sale and the Blooded Horse Sale.
Mr. Huff was elected to the U.S. Trotting Association Board of Directors in 1977, and continued in that post until stepping aside late in 2009. He long served as a member of the USTA Registration Committee, reflecting his interest and expertise in Standardbred breeding and pedigrees.
USTA President Phil Langely had long known and admired Bob: "I met him (in the early 1960s) at Sportsman's Park, where he asked me to okay the check he used to buy Leader Pick from Vic Zeinfeld (Leader Pick went on to sire the winners of more than $12 million). I don't know of anyone in the sport who made as many thoughtful and innovative contributions over the years than Bob did." Bob received the 2010 USTA President's Award which reads as follows " In recognition of your decades of outstanding contributions to the sport of harness racing as a Standardbred breeder, pedigree expert founder of the Michigan Colt Stakes and Michigan 4-H Equine Program, and as a member of the U.S. Trotting Association Board of Directors." He was very proud of this award and showed everyone who came to visit him.
Jerry Haws, president and sales manager for the Blooded Horse Sales Company, worked side-by-side with Bob for many years, up until last year, when Mr. Huff missed his first Blooded Horse Sale in 30 years. "If you didn't know Bob it was hard to narrow him down, but he was just an outstanding person who contributed great things to the sport, to Michigan and to the USTA," Haws said. "From my perspective, working with him at the sale was a great learning experience. He will be missed."
He was the author of the Michigan Colt Stakes legislation, was co-founder of the Michigan 4-H Standardbred program, served on the Board of Directors of the Michigan Harness Horseman's Association, served as chairman of the Michigan Governor's Horse Racing Advisory Council, and in 1984 he was presented the Harness Horse Youth Foundation's Service to Youth Award. In the early 60's Bob was President of the St. Vincent DePaul Society in Durand and also of the DSM Fund, Bob served as Vice Presidet of the Durand School Board in the early 70's.
